This collection contains historical documents and working papers gathered by Dr. Arthur A. Durand during his research on the history of Stalag Luft III which became his book entitled "Stalag Luft III: The Secret Story." Included in the collection are detailed reports of life in the prisoner of war camps, including punishment by the Germans, personnel matters, food and clothing issues, religious, entertainment and sports restrictions. Of significant importance to Durand's research is a complete set of editions of the camp paper "Gefangenen Gazette" which was sent by its founder and editor, Ronald Delaney, himself a POW, to his home in the United States. Delaney presented his entire camp paper collection to the Clark Special Collections area of the United States Air Force Academy McDermott Library. Other important important information includes documentation about the Red Cross and the YMCA, both of which were active in supporting the prisoners of war in the various camps.

Durand was an Air Force officer who served more than 28 years and was assigned intelligence and command duties which also included six years in the History Department at the Air Force Academy.
